Due to globablization, the economic problems faced by modern society require interdisciplinary knowledge from Economics, Management and Informatics. The aim of the Business Economics and Informatics Program is to educate students and to produce leaders with decision making and quantitative skills that are needed to solve problems in the private and public sectors.
Graduates and professionals holding degrees in Social Sciences (including Law and Philosophy), Business, Natural Sciences and Medicine are encouraged to apply. The courses are structured to accommodate those without prior background in Economics, Business or Computer Engineering. The core classes will develop the necessary tools that students need. The courses will concentrate both in theory and applications.
The University of Illinois has a long-standing tradition in economics, computer science and engineering, and is the home of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Mosaic, an early popular World Wide Web browser and precursor to Netscape, was developed at the University of Illinois. The University of Illinois is also one of the five original centers in the U.S. National Science Foundation's Supercomputer Center's Program and it is in the process of launching the Blue Waters Petascale Computing System. The Computer Science and the College of Engineering are ranked among the top five in the world and the Information Economics specialty in the Department of Economics is ranked third in the world. We are also home to the Illinois Informatics Institute.
At the University of Illinois we recognize that a quality education can no longer be defined simply by a traditional, prescribed set of loosely connected courses. Therefore, we focus on creating a highly integrated learning experience that emphasizes flexibility, communication, teamwork and ethics. By providing broad theoretical foundations, extensive practical experience, specialized professional training, and a clear understanding of the global business and policy environment, we produce graduates skilled at combining analytical and creative approaches to formulate modern strategies for the private and public sectors.
