Application

We are currently accepting new applications for Fall 2018.

Our PhD Program Designated a STEM Program

On December 20, 2016, the PhD Program was designated a STEM program. This will allow PhD graduates, who particpate in Optional Practical Training (OPT) with an employer in the United States, to file a request for a total of 3 years of OPT. For more information on the OPT TEM, visit the International Student and Scholar Services website.

Applicants for the Ph.D. program should apply here:

Please do not send original documents to the Economics office. All supporting documents must be submitted in the electronic application.

The web site contains brief instructions regarding the application process and lists the options (with links) for applying on-line or downloading a paper copy of the application.

Additional Material

1. Test scores

*When you take the GRE and TOEFL you need to have your scores sent directly to the Department of Economics at the University of Illinois. You should choose 1836 for the institution code and the department code can be left blank. The GRE cannot be waived.

**Illinois State law requires non-native English speakers to attain a passing score on the speaking portion of either the IELTS or iBT to be eligible for a teaching assistantship. While these tests are not required for admission to the PhD program, applicants are strongly advised to submit their score as early as possible as admission decisions are made in tandem with offers of financial support. For more information see Financial Aid.

Graduate applicants may be exempt from providing a TOEFL or IELTS score if one of the following criteria is met:

Completion of at least two years of post-secondary full-time study, as defined by the home institution, in a country where English is the primary language and at an institution where English is the primary medium of instruction, within five years of the proposed term of initial enrollment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

OR

Please click here for a list of countries that qualify for an exemption from the admissions requirement.
